How To: Big Bouncy Curls!

Hi Peaches! I have a confession… Or should I more accurately state… I have an obsession! BIG hair! I love big hair! Especially when my hair is a bit on the shorter side – which contributes to volume!

I love long, sleek, silky hair, just not on myself. Each to their own. Therefore, If like me, you prefer volume and have a hesitation towards habitually heat styling tool use, then this video will be right up your alley!

It’s super easy to do with a bit of practice, a lot of patience and sufficient time for drying.

As always, I hope this helps you, also I’d love to hear about your favourite products and any future video suggestions/requests!

Awesome Product Alert: The Best Silver Shampoo… EVER!

Hi Peaches! So if you’ve ever had highlights or dabbled in being a blonde bombshell, you’ll understand exactly what I mean when I say that keeping your colour fresh (read less brassy than your copper piping) is a struggle!

Most clients that I see on a daily basis don’t exactly understand why… So If you’re interested in the “science” behind avoiding this trashy – less classy faux pas read on…

If you have a good hairstylist (lucky you!) you should be totally satisfied when leaving your appointment, especially when it comes to blonde. Ideally, your stylist will insist on a toner, which is essential to cancel out any unwanted tones in your hair after the lightning process (you can read my article on blonde hair here).

A toner is in fact – if done correctly – just another term for a semi-permanent colour. This means that depending on various factors it will wash out between approximately 2 to 4 weeks. Thereafter, your hair is likely to turn yellow/brassy – this is where the importance of a silver / purple shampoo should form part of your hair care regimen. To keep your colour on point until your next appointment where you’ll either touch up your roots, get another toner or both.

I’ve been blonde for quite some time, I also have a lot of blonde clients so I have experimented with many products, and thus far this is definitely the best silver/purple shampoo I’ve come across, I recommend it to all my clients, and to you my dear reader!

The results are amazing as you’ll see in my video. I hope this helps you, also I’d love to hear about your favourite products!

Happy Spring Day!

Hello Peaches! Spring has finally arrived in South Africa, it’s by far my favourite season – blossoms everywhere, birds chirping, plants sprouting… Ahhhhhhhh…

Thus to celebrate I’ve decided to share my first youtube video! Eeeeekkkkk! It has taken me a long time to build up the courage to actually film a video (and post it)! It can be daunting to put yourself out there for the world to see, comment and criticize. However, nothing in life is ever accomplished by stagnation. Hence, I made a conscious decision to put my insecurities aside and heed the infamous Nike slogan – “Just do it”!

Hopefully, you’ll find value in my video! Constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. I’d love to interact with you so be fabulous and leave me a comment with suggestions on what you’d like me to create a video about in future!

Spring makes me feel like this scene from the Sound of Music

This video is dedicated to my late grandmother. She was the first person to introduce me to the sound of music!

Although we find ourselves inconsolable when losing a loved one, we must remember that with time, and the changing seasons, spring will come metaphorically, we will grow and learn to treasure the memories made together.

Life is to be celebrated, be grateful for all the blessings you have. Everyone is here on borrowed time, life can be tough and no one knows what tomorrow might hold. Appreciate the people around you, strive to be a compassionate, polite person, and whenever you feel downhearted, attempt to focus your energy on helping someone else. That way you’ll feel enriched, whilst momentarily forgetting your worries, accompanied by the benefit of brightening someone’s day… Bliss.

MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick Giveaway

Con-fuschia Says… Pun Intended

Hi Peaches! Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to be drab, therefore I did a mini-shoot over the weekend – just to get out of the house – or let me be honest and say… Out of my PJ’s. It’s cold and I don’t have much news to share so I thought it might be fun to share some wisdom straight from Confucius!

One of his teachings was a variant of the Golden Rule, sometimes called the “Silver Rule“:

“What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.”

“Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.”

Knit – ZARA
Jeans – Topshop
Ankle Boots – The Fix (ZA)

Always strive to be a better version of yourself than yesterday!

P.S. I’ll be striving to tackle this goal in the gym! Hahahahaha

When Summer’’s End is Nighing…

Girl looking over shoulder wearing floral dress with bow detail from Zara

When summer’s end is nighing
And skies at evening cloud,
I muse on change and fortune
And all the feats I vowed
When I was young and proud.

The weathercock at sunset
Would lose the slanted ray,
And I would climb the beacon
That looked to Wales away
And saw the last of day.

From hill and cloud and heaven
The hues of evening died;
Night welled through lane and hollow
And hushed the countryside,
But I had youth and pride.

And I with earth and nightfall
In converse high would stand,
Late, till the west was ashen
And darkness hard at hand,
And the eye lost the land.

The year might age, and cloudy
The lessening day might close,
But air of other summers
Breathed from beyond the snows,
And I had hope of those.

They came and were and are not
And come no more anew;
And all the years and seasons
That ever can ensue
Must now be worse and few.

So here’s an end of roaming
On eves when autumn nighs:
The ear too fondly listens
For summer’s parting sighs,
And then the heart replies.

DIY Face Mask for Glowing Skin!

honey and yogurt in cups with flower decorations and DIY Capital lettersHi Peaches!! It’s official, winter has clearly hit South Africa. Here’s to snuggles in front of the fire, Glühwein, reading your fave book under the covers or just spending the entire weekend in (extremely) warm PJ’s being completely idle!

But with the sweet comes the sour – and by sour I’m referring to dry, and (heaven forbid) flaky skin, hence I thought I’d share one of my most-liked DIY beauty masks for supple, smooth skin, in addition to being ridiculously inexpensive, it’s easy to concoct, au natural and you’re likely to have these items in your home already!

4 TBSP of Plain Yogurt
1 TBSP of Honey

Mix the ingredients together in a container, thereafter, place it in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes (if you have time at your disposal) – I usually cleanse my face well and ensure that I remove all traces of make-up during this waiting period.

Using your (clean) fingertips gently apply this to your face and let sit for approximately 15 minutes (enough time to do a quick manicure!). Et Voila! You’re ready to rinse and enjoy the feeling of pampered skin!

There’s a multitude of products that you can enlist for homemade skin masks. What’s superb about this mask in particular is that the lactic acid in the yogurt exfoliates the skin, whilst honey is known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds which help to decrease the appearances of scars and increase healing and tissue regeneration.

You’re 3 Apps away from the Perfect Airbrushed Selfie!

Beatnik Peach edited with her top 3 selfie editing apps.

Hi Peaches! When it comes to selfies, let’s be honest, we all aspire to look immaculate, especially when they’re shared on Social Media! Airbrushed Magazine covers and advertisements surround us, and often, our filter-less selfies pales in comparison! Surely we deserve to look as impeccable as the stars!? Snapchat filters are remarkable, unfortunately they just aren’t equipped when it comes to fixing that horrible face crater or correcting ghastly lighting, thus not doing our gorgeous selves justice! Therefore, I’ve researched and compiled my picks of the top apps to get you glammed up, allowing you can slay everyday – no Photoshop training necessary!

AirBrush: Easy Photo Editor – FREE
4.8* – 10 Million Downloads
It doesn’t get much easier than this app, you can target acne or let the app miraculously work its magic, brighten eyes, whiten teeth, give yourself a tan, manipulate your features, cinch that waist and smooth your skin. Makeup filters are available, with an assortment of options that can fill brows, add lipstick, or fake a smoky eye. You’re welcome!

Perfect 365: One-Tap Makeover – FREE
4.2* – 10 Million Downloads
The best free virtual makeup apps out there, it’s like having your own personal glam squad in your pocket, it’s free, however additional in-app purchases are available for special features! Covering everything from foundation to hair, the possibilities are endless! What more could a girl ask for!?

Snow: Selfie, Motion sticker – FREE
4.2* – 50 Million Downloads
My current favorite app! With the rise of Instagram stories, Snapchat is majorly upping their game with adorable filters, but in Korea, they’ve been using snow to fulfil their motion filter cravings. It has thousands of zany filters, plus it’s a real-time Photoshop for normal selfies also. Warning: this app may lead to severe procrastination.

So there you have it babes – go forth and be on fleek!

Review & Giveaway: Rose Gold Oval Brush Set

Rose Gold Oval Brush Set in black perspex stand

Hello Peaches! To do anything well it’s important to have the right tool for the job. If you adore makeup as much as I do, you know that nothing surpasses having a decent brush set. I don’t know about you, but with all the products, lotions and potions this routine can become relatively chaotic, well, it does for me, especially when I’m in a rush! Therefore, the entire process seems to be better orchestrated when having a decent set. I have numerous brush sets, I’ve wanted to splurge on another personal set for a while, but I just haven’t found a set that appealed to me until now!

Enter White Rabbit Republic (WRR). What initially drew my attention to this brand is their cruelty-free approach. I’m a gargantuan animal enthusiast, therefore, I absolutely love that this brand is 100% cruelty-free. I’ve also been looking at similar brushes online, for example, the Elite Mirror Ten Brush Set retails for $360 ( This is quite a bit when converted to South African currency. Hence the price for these brushes are cheap in comparison, however you get what you pay for.

These brushes look super stylish, and are accompanied by a truly expedient brush stand which keeps everything organized! There’s nothing worse than having to stop midway through your daily makeup routine to hunt for that brush you swore you had just a second ago. The stand, which consists from black Perspex, is effortless to assemble and has the adorable WRR bunny emblem on it. Made from synthetic, soft, densely packed bristles applying liquid, powder and cream products has never been easier! Synthetic bristles also decrease product wastage. The ferrules are rose gold plastic and the handles have a rubber-like polymer giving them a matte finish, seemingly an exact replica of the Real Techniques (RT) brush handles.

This concerns me to a certain extent, due to previous disappointment with the RT Brushes specifically the coating on the handles. I’ve had an experience in the past where I cleaned my RT brushes with 91% Propyl Alcohol (I’m a germaphobe) and the polymer started peeling. Not the best look. I cannot say with a 100% certainty that these brushes will do the same, but time will tell.

After using the brushes my experience is that they are ideal for full face, liquid, powder and cream application, foundation, blush, concealer, powder contouring, particularly precise contouring in addition to the perfect lipstick application. However, for me, loving a precise cat eye using liquid/gel, the brush was not adequately effective. I didn’t achieve the desired precision. Perhaps the bristles are too long and thus not effective for meticulousness application. If you prefer a smoky/smudged line this is irrelevant. It creates an excellent smoked liner. I find that you can also create a killer cut crease using the tiny elliptical brush. However, for eyeshadow I don’t feel that the brushes offer effective application when desiring an evenly blended effect. Possibly due to the dense stubby bristles.

You could have and unparalleled makeup collection alphabetically organized and colour coordinated to a T, yet if you don’t have the correct tools, it’s meaningless.

Upon purchasing this set WRR were kind enough to send me an extra set. Therefore, I’m running this giveaway, as I’m sure they’ll be cherished by someone who’d enjoy to add to their collection, or even a newbie that would appreciate a set that’s specifically made for personal makeup application.

To win this set please enter via the Raffle Copter widget underneath.

Taking time to smell the Roses… Real Talk

dusty pink silk lace kimono from forever new south africa worn by girl smelling roses

In life I’m a firm believer in metaphorically pruning the rose bush that is your life, similar to an expert botanist, tending to it with love, care and charging it with positive energy, whilst taking time out to rest, reflect and reassess your goals to gauge if you’re closer or further to attaining the ideal life you’d love to live. Because leading a blissful, gratifying life that you envision for yourself is the collective goal, isn’t it!?

However, occasionally we become caught up with needless desirables to such an extent that we neglect to appreciate what we have, spending excessive amounts of time obsessing over (insert whatever bs here) which result in exhaustion, lethargy, halfhearted efforts, procrastination, etc. We create our own mountains and wonder why we never reach the top.

Theoretically, the biggest problem stems from our lack of appreciation for the basics, fundamentals such as breathing, living, and waking up knowing that your loved ones are safe. Say what you wish to say, it may be unnerving, yet tomorrow might be too late. Devote time each day, away from whatever device you’re glued to 24/7 to ask your family and friends (Hannah Baker?) if they genuinely are coping. Don’t stop perusing your goals or disregard your dreams, however, dedicate time to appreciate the prosperity you receive freely.

With recent events and all the hate and violence staring us in the face, suffocating us with its boisterous persistence, close enough to feel its breath on our necks. What actions can we implement to upturn this destructiveness? The power to decide is uniquely yours, will you share or shatter it, stop the provocation of negativity, or let it overgrow, allow it to bring you down and crush your soul OR acknowledge, accept and dispel it. Renounce these feelings, mourn if necessary, for as long as you need, thereafter move on.

In life there exist countless elements that are out of our control, if you’re brutally honest with yourself, you’ll reach the conclusion that the only control you have, is the control over your attitude, your outlook towards life, and your subsequent actions towards these situations is your sole salvation… One example of the few consistencies in life is change… Whether you approve or not, accept it or not, it’s happening every day, will you allow it to defy you, or will you allow it to define you, shape you, or scrape you, will you allow it to inspire you to be compassionate, or resentful?

This is your choice… Fundamentally, this is the only choice you have. The choice of how to react to people, situations, and life! Banish the drama, relinquish people and objects that hold you back.

The universal law dictates that everything consists of energy, preserve the positive and eschew the negative. After all,… What could you lose by having a positive attitude? Nothing. What could you gain by having a positive attitude? Nothing. However, you’ll feel noticeably stronger, healthier and upgraded from choosing the latter. And that, my darling, you can take to the bank.

Worth the Splurge: BB & CC Cream

Channel CC Cream and Dior BB CreamOMG girls! After months (possibly even years – cue inner diva) I’ve finally (for now) found the ultimate in make-up magnificence!

Alliterative creams—beauty balms (BB) and colour correcting (CC) — have been around for, like, ever. Yet, I’ve only recently discovered how amazing they are! A (CC) cream has the distinctive property of targeting discoloration, whilst also treating uneven skin tone it vaunts the power of a (BB) Cream which serves as an all-in-one foundation, moisturiser, primer, as well as a SPF. Specifications and properties tend to vary from brand to brand, but I’ve found what I believe to be the pinnacle in both these categories.

Chanel (CC) Cream

Great for dry skin, Chanel’s creamy formula includes hyaluronic acid to fight fine lines while providing maximum hydration. It cancels out some of the redness and minimizes the visibility of my blemishes, although I still need to use a concealer. My skin is subsequently left with a slight luminous glow and visibly reduced pores. The texture is semi-matte but luminous. I’m also lucky enough to find a shade (Beige 10) to match my fair skin tone perfectly (a victory in its own right). This product comes with a hefty price tag, but it’s texture, buildable coverage and noteworthy properties have me mesmerised.

Dior Hydra Life (BB) Cream

Ladies, allow me to introduce Hydra Life (BB) Cream, a moisturising, sublimating and protective BB cream that breathes youthfulness and beauty into the skin. Its fresh texture, subtle color, reveals a velvety skin, without imperfections, that radiates naturalness. It adds the moisturising and anti-aging power of Dior’s classic Hydra Life line, in addition to combining the properties of a unifying make-up base that reveals unparalleled luminosity. A product that corrects the imperfections and irregularities of the surface, unifies the tone and sublimates the luminosity to instantly reveal a perfectly smooth and velvety skin, without defects. Skin is protected encapsulating all its freshness which reveals in a lasting way a vibrant youthful beauty. What more could I possibly say!? Perfection…

Almost… So close, but yet so far… The lightest shade 001 LUMINOUS BEIGE – *Rolls Eyes* is way too dark for my complexion… Can you hear the violins??? *Sigh*

Once again this is not a cheap product, however – if you’re not a whiter shade of pale – like moi it’s unquestionably a winner!

Hot Topic: Consider having a Blonde moment!

Black & White image of Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe – The Original Blonde Bombshell

With ample remarkable advancements in hair technology from numerous professional brands, blonde/platinum, and other fashion colours have become spectacularly popular. If done correctly there truly is no comparison as far as artificial hair colour goes. However, with the increasing popularity of these colours, I’ve noticed through talking with a lot of clients that there are some colossal misconceptions with regards to attaining these, thus as a qualified hairstylist, I feel it’s my duty to elaborate on the process/processes involved. I’ve seen some horrifying dye jobs, that have left clients in tears. I’d like to help you make an educated decision should you decide to continuing this pilgrimage towards platinum locks that would make the Mother of Dragons envious.

Exclusive Interview with Photographer Peter Chan

During a recent holiday I was privileged enough to have the opportunity to collaborate with Professional Fashion, Beauty, and Lifestyle Photographer, Peter Chan. As a Hair Stylist & Makeup Artist I’m mostly more comfortable behind the scenes, although I fancy myself as being a bit of a selfie enthusiast. However, since this is my first post for 2017, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and explore another facet of this diverse industry, by playing dress up and trying to strike a pose for the camera. I’m tremendously grateful for Peter’s easy going personality as I was quite nervous about this shoot, however he directed me effortlessly and made me feel at home in front of the camera. Of course I also leaped at the opportunity to interview Peter to learn more about Photography.

Makeup Look – Pleased as Punch

Colourful Eye Makeup Look

So today after a (very) long absence from blogging, I’ve decided to share with you how I created this makeup look. With summer approaching rapidly, I thought it might be fun to do something a bit more colourful than my usual makeup looks. I had a lot of fun doing the makeup in this instance and will endeavour to do bolder, more colourful looks for you in future. So without further ado here’s a list of all products used to create this “Pleased as Punch Makeup Look”.

Watermelons captioned with 12 Weeks to a Rocking Bikini Body

O, my, word, girls! If you live in the Southern Hemisphere it’s almost that time again – BIKINI SEASON! Eek! I have been particularly lazy in terms of sticking to a fitness routine this… uhm… year! That’s right! I haven’t done any exercise since February 2015! Cue mini hyperventilation attack! I must also add that I’m a bit of a procrastinator; hence I often subject myself to major cram time! Consequently, from this point on it’s exactly what I will be doing! I’m lucky in a sense that I don’t pick weight up easily, hence there’s not much to drop, and my biggest goal is toning.

Ahh…. Don’t you just love that word – toning? (I hope you can detect a bit of sarcasm there…) The reason for my cynicism is due to the nebulous usage of the word. Just refer to nearly every single magazine isle whilst doing your daily grocery run during summer time and you’re sure to spot what I’m referring to. Cover upon cover promising these tight, toned abs and pert backside in 4 just weeks! I call BS on these lies! Been there, tried that – didn’t bother to buy the T-shirt! No, this year I’m particularly excited to try the Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide. (more…)

Interview with Cape Town Veteran Makeup Artist, David Sharp

I recently sat down with my friend, and veteran professional makeup artist David Sharp. He is celebrating his 15th year in the beauty industry and is currently the top Artist for Lancôme South Africa. Throughout his career, he has learned and experienced so much and I’m delighted to share his words of wisdom with you.

Veteran Makeup Artist, David Sharp holding brush - Photographed by Michael MacLachlan
David Sharp – Photographed by Michael MacLachlan
Wow! 15 years of makeup and beauty experience under your belt! How does it feel?

It feels good! I’ve accomplished A LOT in 15 years! I’ve learned so many things, and I still have loads more to learn! I think that now I have a lot to give back! The industry has changed quite a bit, in terms of how people perceive beauty. I somehow feel that the media can be misogynistic from time to time. Women are constantly bombarded by edited, flawless versions of celebrities, models, etc. Therefore, I’m here to reassure women that it’s perfectly normal to have these (perceived) flaws, and that I’m not here to change the way they look – I’m here to enhance their best features.

When did you know a career in beauty was your passion?

I never imagined I would become a make-up artist as I actually started my career as a hairstylist! Consequently, I opted for a change into retail where I worked for Lancôme – 13 years ago. It’s actually after being chosen to work on the Miss SA pageant in 2004/2005 that the artist bug bit and I’ve never looked back.

Hair Superhero - Olaplex

Superheroes exist as fictitious characters, created to be extra-ordinary. That’s what makes them SUPERHEROES; the rules don’t apply to them. Governed only by the limitations of the imagination, most superheroes are remembered by their super powers. It’s a certain quality that only they possess, setting them apart from the norm, thus catapulting them from the ordinary, right into the atmosphere of awesomeness.   So remarkable that they are often commemorated in publications, animations, film adaptations and idolized by the masses.

I’m incredibly excited to be able to equate these qualities with a product! It goes by the name of Olaplex; and it’s the pioneering Superhero of the hair industry! Just one quick Google search will corroborate this. Similar to other superheroes, it’s already the subject of videos, tutorials, publications and comment threads the world over. Article upon article, photograph upon photograph is indicative of its magnificence. And now, FINALLY, it’s available on South African soil!
